Apps I Actually Use

I run an unusual business when it comes to technology. For most of my clients, they have a dedicated desk, work computer, office supplies and use a small pool of software (hello, Office 365) to execute everything they need to get their work done. Well, what happens when going to the office is actually against the law? You regroup and look at the work station in your hand right now (or on the charger recovering from incessant Facebook scrolling - no judgement). Here is a list of apps I use to get work done without being tied to a desktop.

1) Gmail/G Suite apps - This is a gimme, but many people who use Google’s G Suite never bothered to download the associated apps and login. If you are in a pinch and need to see your Google Doc, you’ll be logged in and ready to update it without delay. I suggest you make a new folder and add all of the associated apps so they are in easy reach.

2) Zoom - The newest buzz word for 2020 is “Zoom” and we are all doing it. This app has some controversy, but that hasn’t stopped companies and friend groups of all sizes from using it. Another by-product has become an industry of artists designing backgrounds to cover up your laundry behind your makeshift desk.

3) Adobe Spark - For me, I need to be able to design posts for clients in a very quick turnaround as the news of shut downs and essential business policies change. If you are an Adobe Creative Suite user, give Spark a download and use their handy template library, image resizer (even has Eventbrite, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter defaults preloaded) and be ready to post quick announcements. When the state of Texas announced the closure of salons I designed this post within minutes while picking up my groceries in my car from Tom Thumb. We’re all learning the value in flexibility these days.

4) Airtable - Confession, Excel gives me a migraine. I love all the powerful things it does, but it feels clunky when I’m using it for projects that aren’t budgets. Airtable is similar to Excel, but with the feel and flexibility for creatives. There are also lots of templates for everything from event planning to managing assets for social media. Plus, you can assign users and tasks within a project and the app is beautiful.

Good luck and let your phone relax every once in a while!
