About Meagan and The Modern Take

I started The Modern Take in 2017 when I realized I had enough lovely clients who asked me to design Squarespace websites, build their social media, or write content for a blog. I lov project work and contributing to the greater good with a team. It’s been challenging, nothing about business is easy, and endlessly creative.

So why am I qualified to work with PR firms, major brands and small businesses? First, I’m a professional writer and editor with 16 years of published articles under my belt. Read them here. Since 2004 (also the same year I created my Facebook account), I have had a by-line above profiles, photoshoots, fashion spreads and wellness articles. In 2005, I was hired to be the editor-in-chief of a women’s magazine called Crescendo. I was a junior in college and quickly learned that I thrived in a deadline-based work environment with other creators. The entire first year was a blur of late-night copy editing sessions, photoshoots on a shoestring budget and running across campus (go Mizzou!) to make my 8am Italian 3 class. Editing is not sitting at a desk with a red pen. Being an editor is managing people, keeping the big picture in the forefront, and making decisions quickly without lowering the quality for my readers and my team. Flash forward to 2019 and I’ve edited over 50 issues of lifestyle magazines and written hundreds of articles.

What is The Modern Take?

Over the years, I started developing basic websites for businesses I met through my publishing company. I used my visual and writing skills to not only design the sites but write exciting content without having to outsource parts of the project. Those same clients came to me when they became interested in expanding their presence on social media and building those communities with the same expert care and voice as their websites. These projects were creative in new ways for me, and they helped build the businesses I had come to know so well. The Modern Take was born out of that creativity and excitement. I see the power of good writing and design and have a specialty in taking an existing business’s brand and making it accessible to new customers online.

In 2020, I’m focusing on getting brands to use the best online tools to build online shopping experiences. Shopify, Pinterest, Instagram Shop and Facebook are available for anyone to use when they want to move into a secure, yet exciting, place for their customers. Along with my three packages for social media management, Squarespace web sites and event marketing, adding the ability to build an online shopping experience is what I bring to the table for my clients.

Currently, my clients have found me through their PR agencies based in Dallas. Often I am hired as a contractor or am referred from past clients (thanks, guys!). I really enjoy working with PR agencies and contributing to their strategy for a client. Some of the agencies I have worked with are Friedman PR, SMPR and A Tower PR on hospitality, nonprofit, retail and restaurant accounts.

Meagan with the bonus “a”

Writing a bio is not a pretty thing. Mostly, I feel like having to condense 35 years of life into a three-sentence paragraph is a little sad, but I don’t think I’ve hit the age to write a memoir either, so here we are.

I’m a Dallas, Texas native who really got to understand how bizarrely special that is during my 10 years city-hopping before returning four years ago. In 2008 I began writing a recipe column called “Recipe Files” where I wrote recipes and wine recommendations based on reader questions and interviews with Dallas chefs. It was effortless for me to write these columns, and I needed to know everything I could about cooking. I decided that the only way for me to do this well was to step behind the pass, and I applied for cooking school at Le Cordon Bleu in Boston for the Fall 2009 semester. Fast forward two years, and I crossed a small stage with enough techniques and recipes for me to write a dozen books. I moved from Boston to Washington DC to West Africa and on to Sao Paulo, Brazil writing and cooking while working for the State Department producing events. I moved back to Dallas for many reasons (most of them related to Mexican food) in the spring of 2016.

My world revolves around a few things, my husband Doug, our enigma of a dog Fifi and, at around 2pm every day, what recipe I might try for dinner. You are welcome to cook along at MeaganCamp.com
